Selena Gomez is tired of how the world perceives her and wants to change the status quo. The singer never shies away from telling her truth, no matter how unpleasant or uncomfortable it is. However, her vulnerability, especially on mental health issues, hasn’t always served her well.
Gomez first opened up about her mental health struggles in her 2022 documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me. In a recent interview, the entertainer explained that making the brave decision to put her truth out there was super intentional. “The documentary [My Mind & Me] was me finally taking a breath and saying, ‘OK, so everything I’ve been trying to be this whole time, I’m a little exhausted and here’s why.’”
Unfortunately, her desire to share her story and connect with humanity was soon mistaken as a cry out for pity, “It was terrifying for me to let people inside my world that way,” she told THR. “I wanted people to understand, ‘Oh, she was literally going through a really hard time. That’s why she canceled those two tours.’” However, the opposite was the case.
“People completely misunderstood what I was trying to do with it. Not everyone, just a group of people, and they love to label me as this victim.”
The Rare Beauty founder admitted that being seen in that light “bothers” her. “It makes me so mad,” she declared. “It’s funny because the things that I walked through. I fully believe I’m one of the strongest people that I have ever known.”
Selena Gomez Enjoys Her ‘Private Life’ & Feels ‘Safest’ With BF Benny Blanco
Despite the misinterpretation of her intentions, Gomez revealed fame is no longer unbearable at 32. Although she has been in the spotlight since age 10, the Emilia Perez star manages to enjoy a private life. Even with 423 million followers on Instagram and best friends like Taylor Swift, the pop star insists she loves a normal life.
“I still feel like I have a private life. I have my places to go, and no one bothers me at, like, [my half-sister] Gracie’s soccer games. No one really bothers me unless I’m in the whole to-do.”
Gomez also added that she experiences a lot of normalcy with her boyfriend, Benny Blanco. Although the pair never shies away from PDA on social media, the billionaire singer admits that what fans see barely scratches the surface. “I guess this is the safest I’ve ever felt in one, and I see a future with this person,” she gushed of the producer. “When you put a little bit out there, people are not as hungry to hunt you down. But there’s so much of my relationship people don’t see.”
